Nestled within the enchanting coastal village of Latchi in Cyprus, our restaurant is housed in a remarkable 300-year-old building adorned with traditional Cypriot arches. Steeped in heritage, our establishment has stood the test of time, witnessing the transformations of an entire community.
Originally, Porto Latchi served a different purpose, functioning as a carob store for many decades. Its walls have witnessed the hustle and bustle of a bygone era, as carob beans were brought in from the local orchards, carefully stored, and prepared for exportation. The building itself became a symbol of economic activity and played a significant role in sustaining the livelihoods of the locals.
In 1984, the story of Porto Latchi took an unexpected turn when it was put up for public auction. After a spirited bidding process, the historic building found its new purpose as a restaurant, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its rich history. The winning bid of 131,006 pounds sealed the fate of Porto Latchi, transforming it into a culinary haven that would captivate the hearts and palates of visitors for years to come.
For two decades, Porto Latchi thrived as a beacon of gastronomic delight. Guests from near and far flocked to experience the mouthwatering flavors and the warm, inviting atmosphere that permeated the restaurant. It became a cherished gathering place, where friends, families, and travelers would come together to savor the finest seafood dishes, prepared with a meticulous attention to detail.
However, tragedy struck on November 10th, 2004, when a devastating fire engulfed the beloved Porto Latchi. The flames consumed the building, leaving nothing but ashes and memories behind. The loss was felt deeply by the community, as the restaurant had become an integral part of Latchi’s identity.
But the spirit of Porto Latchi could not be extinguished. Determined to preserve the legacy and continue the culinary journey, the dedicated owners embarked on an ambitious restoration project. Against all odds, within a remarkable six months, the restaurant was reborn from the ashes, emerging even more resplendent than before.
